Last month, two construction workers in Frisco found themselves in a dangerous predicament after a section of scaffolding collapsed beneath them. The frightening incident occurred on April 24th around 9:00 a.m. at the Omni Hotel construction site, which is located right next to the new headquarters of the Dallas Cowboys.

Luckily, both of the construction workers didn’t suffer injuries when the structure failed. Kevin Haines of the Frisco Fire Department said the first worker to be rescued was pulled from the collapsed structure by the construction company’s boom truck, while Frisco firefighters rescued the second worker. As of now, the cause of scaffolding collapse is under investigation.

Although these two individuals were lucky to make it out of this accident alive, it is important to remember that construction workers face numerous hazards whenever they set foot on a job site. According to data collected by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), one out five worker deaths reported annually (20%) occurs in the construction industry. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that there were 123 construction worker deaths in 2019 due to workplace accidents. Applying this data to a five-day workweek results in a construction site death occurring just about every other workday.

According to a November 2020 report from the Texas Department of Insurance’s Division of Workers’ Compensation, 11,300 nonfatal injuries and illnesses were reported in Texas’s construction industry in 2019. The report notes that this is an incidence rate of 1.5 cases for every 100 full-time equivalent workers. This equates to 43 construction site injuries each workday in a five-day workweek.
