A chemical leak at the LyondellBasell facility in La Porte resulted in the death of two contractor workers and injured thirty other people. Most of the injured were transported to the hospital after breathing in toxins. Twenty-four of the individuals were treated and released, while six remained hospitalized due to burns from the chemical leak.

In a public statement, LyondellBasel said they “deeply regret this incident” and are “keeping the families of the injured in their thoughts.”

Emergency crews responded to the LyondellBasell facility around 7:30 p.m. on July 27. According to them, the acid leak occurred in the acetyls unit of the plant. The chemicals involved in the incident were used to make medical supplies and food-grade vinegar.

Although LyondellBasell said 100,000 pounds of acid was released during the incident, the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office said the leak was contained to just the plant. La Porte Office of Emergency Management said the leak poses no threat to the surrounding public and air monitoring tests conducted by Harris County Pollution Control indicate no offsite impact.

Since it was determined that there was no explosion or fire, Harris County Fire Marshal's Office handed the investigation over to Harris County Pct. 8 Constable.
