Since 1971, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been collecting workplace accident data to reduce the number of accidents across the nation. Although the number of injuries and fatalities have decreased since then, OSHA discovered that the same workplace injuries continued to occur every year—this is how they came up with the fatal hour hazards. Our Houston work accident attorneys explain OSHA’s fatal four work hazards.

OSHA’s Fatal Four

  • Falls: Approximately 36 percent of all deaths in the workplace occur due to employees falling. Many of these accidents occur because workers fall from unprotected sides without proper fencing. They also fall from holes, roofs, scaffolding, construction sites, and more. OSHA has implemented strict fall protection requirements in the workplace to reduce the number of slip and fall accidents.
  • Struck by an Object: A little over 10 percent of workplace accidents occur because a worker is hit by an object. Many fatal injuries occur because of a swinging, falling, or misplaced object. Rigging failure, loss materials, or equipment malfunctions often causes struck by object accidents.
  • Electrocutions: Nearly 9 percent of fatal work accidents occur because of electrocutions. Primarily at construction sites, workers are at a high risk of electrocution because they are exposed to wiring, wet conditions, and exposed outlets. OSHA has implemented a strict standard for electrical safety in the workplace to ensure that employers keep their workers safe from electrocution accidents.
  • Caught In-Between: Another common cause of fatal workplace accident includes being caught in-between machines, tools, or other objects. This makes up a little over 2 percent of fatal workplace accidents in the country.
