“I didn’t see them.”

This is one of the most common statements people make when explaining why they got into an accident. Blind spots are a well-known hazard of driving a vehicle of any size, but they are particularly dangerous for motorcyclists. While a side-to-side collision between two cars may not result in a catastrophic injury, changing lanes into a motorcyclist could easily throw them off the bike.

Without further ado, here are a few ways that both motorists and motorcyclists can avoid blind spot motorcycle accidents.

Tips for Motorists

No matter the size of your car or truck, seeing motorcyclists can be a challenge because of how much smaller they are than other vehicles. Additionally, many motorcyclists take unnecessary risks that reduce their visibility even more, such as lane splitting at high speeds and weaving in and out of traffic.

That said, you can increase your likelihood of seeing a motorcyclist (and avoiding a collision) by:

  • Properly adjusting your mirrors. Depending on your vehicle, you can greatly reduce your blind spots by positioning your sideview and rearview mirrors in the best possible way. If a different person drove before you, take the time to adjust your mirrors back to the position you normally use instead of making do with their settings.
  • Completing a 3-part check when changing lanes. Before you change lanes, 1) check your rearview mirror, 2) check your sideview mirror, and 3) look over your shoulder. This system can help you overcome your blind spots and nearly eliminate the possibility of changing lanes into a motorcyclist.
  • Using your blinker. Many drivers use their blinkers only if they see other vehicles that may need to know about their lane change. But motorcyclists have a propensity for accidentally hiding in other vehicles’ blind spots, and using your blinker every time you change lanes can give them a much-needed warning if you didn’t see them. They can then get out of your way before you hit them.

In general, the best way to avoid hitting a motorcyclist is to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Any distractions (such as texting) can significantly increase your likelihood of a blind spot collision.

Tips for Motorcyclists

Statistically, accidents have a much higher fatality rate for motorcyclists than motorists. As such, motorcyclists should not depend on the surrounding vehicles to see them and drive safely.

To avoid blind spot accidents, motorcyclists should:

  • Avoid riding in the blind spots of other vehicles. Every vehicle is different, but blind spots are generally on the sides of a car or truck—particularly at the rear. If you need to pass a vehicle, do so quickly (and, of course, safely).
  • Improve visibility. Wear colorful, bright, fluorescent, or reflective clothing and gear to help other drivers see you more easily. Your headlights can help, as well, even during the day.
  • Ride defensively. You may be a safe and responsible rider, but that does not mean the motorists around you are driving with the same level of care. The greater level of focus you maintain, the more easily it will be to anticipate the decisions and movements of other vehicles on the road. Avoid riding after drinking alcohol or when you haven’t had enough sleep, as both intoxication and sleep deprivation will interfere with your awareness and judgment.

As a motorcyclist, statistics are against you. With an extraordinary level of care, however, you can greatly reduce your odds of a serious accident.
