Two men were killed and one was injured in a two-car accident involving a 2017 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer on Highway 181 in Texas, between Beeville and Normanna.

Mark Wesley Swisher and William Charles Mego were driving together in a Dodge pickup truck when a male driver in a Peterbilt driving the opposite direction veered into their lane and hit them head-on. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Peterbilt was transported to the hospital to treat injuries.

While it’s not immediately clear why the truck driver veered into the opposite lane, the Texas Department of Public Safety acknowledged that U.S. 181 was wet at the time of the crash.

Causes of Truck Accidents

While car accidents can occur at any time and for a variety of reasons, commercial truck accidents can be caused by unique factors.

Common causes include:

  • Fatigue: Many truck drivers are commercial employees and have to drive long hours across states, with little rest in between stops.
  • Improperly packed cargo: Cargo has been known to slip off the backs of trucks if improperly packed, resulting in hazards for the cars behind them and on the road in general.
  • Alcohol and drug use: Truck drivers sometimes have a few drinks at stops in between towns across the country, while some even carry alcohol and drugs with them while driving, resulting in distracted driving and delayed response times.
  • Speeding: While speeding is dangerous for any type of vehicle, trucks have weaker brakes and take longer to come to a full stop. Speeding can prevent drivers from stopping safely and can cause them to veer into another lane on the road.
