Although distracted driving is an issue for drivers of all ages, texting while driving is the leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States. Using your phone while driving takes your eyes away from the road, your hands away from the steering wheel, and your attention away from the primary task of operating a vehicle.

Additionally, teen drivers are often inexperienced, which can result in less focus on the road and the lack of understanding when unexpected situations occur while driving. They are more likely to text while driving and even have a conversation through text messages.

Despite knowing the dangers of distracted driving and seeing constant safety ads on television, teenagers continue to practice poor driving habits. Fortunately, many app developers have found a way to turn cell phones into a weapon to fight distracted driving—not make it happen.

Some of the most popular distracted driving apps available for either—or both—iPhone and Android users include the following:

  • AT&T DriveMode – Available on iPhone and Android, this app silences incoming phone calls and text messages while the vehicle is in motion. DriveMode also has a voice command feature which allows users to search the navigation, control your music, and even reply to messages without using your hands.
  • LifeSaver – For iPhone users, this app allows parents to block their children’s cellphones when they’re behind the wheel. Furthermore, LifeSaver lets parents know when their teenager arrives safely at their destination and even give rewards for safe driving behavior.
  • Canary – This free app provides parents with information on their children’s driving habits. Parents are alerted each time their teen texts, answers the phone or uses social media while driving. Canary also lets parents know how fast their child is driving and if he/she drives outside a set perimeter on the map.
  • SafeDrive – Not only does this app disable the ability to text while driving, but it also rewards teens for good driving behavior. Once your child starts driving over six miles per hour, the app will begin to award points which can be used as discounts in participating shops. However, if your teen caves in and uses their phone during a trip, they will lose all the points they accumulated.
  • TrueMotion Family – Free for both iPhone and Android, this app calculates a “trip score” each time your child is behind the wheel. The rating system is based on the overall drive and moments when your child may have been distracted while driving.

Whether your teen downloads one or several distracted driving apps, your child is a significant step toward being a safe driver. They can use their cellphone to stay accident-free.
