A car accident is a sudden, violent, and terrifying experience. The shock of it may leave you dazed and confused. However, if you are still conscious and reasonably unharmed, then you should pull yourself together and check things out.

It can be hard to remember what to prioritize. Here is a list of the top 4 things you should check after a car accident:

1. The Well-Being of Everyone Involved

The safety and preservation of life is always the first order of business after an accident. If there are passengers in your car, you will of course verify that they have not been too badly injured. You should then get out of your vehicle and check the status of the person or persons in the other vehicle. You should render assistance if necessary.

Only after you have checked the condition of everyone involved in the accident should you call emergency services. You also want to make a note of the date and time of the crash. The latter especially can be crucial in any future litigation you’re involved in.

2. The Damage Done to Each Vehicle

You should thoroughly inspect both vehicles. Take photos of the damage done to both. You should also make note of any liquid or gas pouring out at the time. These may not come out clearly in the photographs. You also want to take a photo of the position of the vehicles and the larger scene of the accident. Take as many photographs of these things as you can.

3. Make and Model of Vehicles Involved

Write down and take a photograph of the other vehicle’s license plate. You should also note the make, model, and color of it. If you do not know the make or model, photograph the brand emblem or name on the car. You should also take a photo of the vehicle from different angles, so that the make and model can be determined at some later time.

4. Check the Road Conditions

Take a note and a photograph of any muddy or wet roads. You should also take pictures of degraded road signs. Heavy rain, mist, fog, snow, or other bad driving conditions should also be noted.

Life, damage done, make and model, road conditions—these are your priorities. If you can get the details on all of these things right, then you will be in good shape when you need to present the circumstances of the accident to your insurer or lawyer.
