Several fires this week are highlighting the ever-present dangers in the oil and gas industry. Just this morning, a fire at LyondellBasell Industries in Houston drew emergency crews and media coverage. The fire, which a Lyondell spokesperson states occurred in the refinery’s coker unit, caused some damage to the facility, which processes over 263,000 barrels per day. Authorities have reported that the fire is now out and that the situation is being monitored.
Another fire occurred Thursday at the Baytown ExxonMobil facility. According to officials, the cause of the fire has still yet to be determined. Authorities report all employees have been accounted for but no official reports have been released regarding injuries. A community to shelter in place was not issued, but air quality is being monitored.
The two fires in close succession yet again show the volatility and dangers that exist at plants and refineries, many of which are located in Houston and nearby areas.
