Talcum powder lawsuits have been filed across the country, cases of women developing ovarian cancer from using the product have caused a stir. How Talcum Powder Is Marketed

Talcum powder is known by the average consumer as baby powder, as well as talc powder or body powder. It is an everyday product, found commonly in nearly every family’s home. It is often used to help keep babies fresh and soothe diaper rash, and as a deodorant. This image of safety and cleanliness has, for many, given many the idea that talcum powder is harmless. After all, if we can use it on our children, it should be safe, right?

Think again. One of the main ingredients found in talcum powder is a mineral called hydrated magnesium silicate. This is also the ingredient that has been stirring controversy, as some studies have been linked to the possibility of developing cancer in the ovaries.

Concerns Date Back to the 1970’s

Since the early 1970’s, there have been studies that have found talc in about 75% of ovarian tumors. Another concern that arose during that time was that talc was often located in underground deposits where asbestos may be find. This close proximity may have lent to the possibility of some of the talc becoming contaminated.

This is why some of the most popular, brand-name companies, such as Johnson & Johnson, have lawsuits filed against them due to the failure to disclose the risk of developing ovarian cancer. There may be about as many as 10, 000 cases, more or less, of ovarian cancer linked to the usage of talcum powder.
