According to the Texas Department of Transportation, between 2012 and 2014, over 8,200 reported pedestrian accidents and bike accidents involving automobiles resulted in more than 500 deaths. As a result, local, state, and federal officials sought a way to improve the safety of cyclists and pedestrians by designing better roadway solutions and promoting the awareness of how individuals can drive, walk, and cycle safer.

Last month, the North Central Texas Council of Government Transportation Department and Regional Transportation Council launched a new program called Look Out Texans in effort to make the roads in North Texas a safer place for everyone. The campaign aims at bringing together a greater and more united sense of community amongst North Texans while promoting an increase in respect to the roads and the individuals using them.

To promote the new program and safety for all, the team for Look Out Texans is participating in various types of outreach and setting up campaign advertisement in the following forms:

• Ads
• Billboards
• Social media
• School outreaches
• Transportation agency
• Local government coordination

These outreaches and advertisements are created to help people understand how cyclists, walkers, and drivers can interact together on the road is nonhazardous manners and using extra safety precautions. For example, one sign states, “Drivers: Give 3+ feet when passing a bicyclist.” When all road users participate in safe driving, walking, or cycling manners, streets become safer for everyone, resulting in fewer accidents and fatalities.
