On this day 15 years ago - June 15, 2000 - a then-newly released safety report from The Surface Transportation Policy Project raised significant concerns among local residents and city officials. According to the report - “Mean Streets”- the Houston metro area was among one of the most dangerous in the country when it came to pedestrian safety. Here are some quick facts about the city:

• According to the report, there were a total of 205 pedestrian deaths in the greater Houston area between 1997 and 1998.
• Houston, at the time, was the 11th most dangerous metro area in the country for pedestrians.

Although the report raised significant concerns, recent statistics show that there has unfortunately been little progress in stopping pedestrian accidents and making roads safer for those who - for business or pleasure - who hit the pavement on foot in Houston.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the last 15 years have seen the hope of Houston becoming a more pedestrian-friendly city slip away. Since 2003, more than 1,000 pedestrians have been killed in the Houston area. Houston has worked its way up to the 7th most dangerous city in the U.S. for pedestrians.
