The ridesharing business model behind Uber and Lyft has achieved great success, and many people across the country are using these transportation options to conveniently get from place to place. Unfortunately, these types of companies have lately received bad press for a string of fraud and sexual assault allegations against their drivers – some of whom were not actually their drivers at all.

Just one example of many similar stories that have cropped up recently happened right here in Dallas. A man with a criminal record who spent time in prison allegedly used a fake Uber permit to give a young woman a ride to her home. Right after he dropped her off, he followed her inside and assaulted her. Uber confirms that the driver was not permitted to drive for their company. You can view the original news story here.

Keep yourself safe by remembering these tips when ordering a ride from Uber or Lyft:

  1. First of all, make sure you are getting into the right car. It would be rather embarrassing, not to mention rude, to jump into the wrong car on accident (this has happened!). Check the make and license plate number of the car and make sure it matches the number in the app.
  2. One of the biggest problems so far with Uber and Lyft is that people are ordering rides only to be picked up by someone who was not their designated driver. Check that the name and face of your driver match the name and picture from the app.
  3. It is a good idea to text family and friends when you accept the ride so that they are aware of your location and approximate ETA.
  4. Have your driver drop you off at a nearby street corner or local business so that they will not see exactly where you live.
  5. Exercise good judgment – if it doesn’t feel right, don’t accept the ride.

With a little common sense, your Uber or Lyft experience can be a safe and pleasant one.
