Earlier this week, Takata Corporation - an auto parts manufacturer based in Japan - initiated the largest auto recall in American history when it admitted that its airbags in close 34 million U.S. vehicles were defective. Days later, officials from the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) announced that it would be increasing oversight of the nationwide recall.

According to NHTSA officials and representatives of the U.S. Department of transportation, the federal government has an interest in ensuring that the recall is handled promptly and efficiently, as it concerns such a large amount of cars and trucks on American roads. The recall affects various models from a number of manufacturers, including:

Officials are stating that the NHTSA is getting involved because Takata and dealers have been slow to replace airbags in recalled vehicles. In some cases, consumers are waiting months to have their defective airbags replaced. To ensure that recall services are streamlined and to prevent additional injuries - at least 6 deaths and over 100 injuries worldwide have been linked to faulty Takata airbags.
