Early last month, the Occupational Safety and Health Program discovered that a Denver VA Medical Center contained asbestos in the building’s overhead spaces and stairwells in the form of a fireproofing spray. The material was uncovered when an industrial hygienist tested the material while a construction crew was inspective the roof for leaks.

The Department of Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency performed a second inspection, and the hospital is now required to submit a plan to remove the asbestos-containing material. According to the Acting Medical Center Director, Carolyn Adams, “aggressive actions” are already being undertaken to inform employees of the presence of the dangerous substance.

While asbestos does contain fire-retardant and anti-corrosion properties, it is widely known that inhaling airborne fibers is directly linked to dangerous health effects, including mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer affecting the lungs and stomach lining that is usually fatal.

Once in high demand for a variety of building and trade-related applications, asbestos has caused the following groups to be vulnerable to illness:

  • Construction workers
  • Auto mechanics
  • Power plant workers
  • Factory workers
  • Plumbers
  • Electricians
  • Firefighters
  • Veterans

In fact, the veteran population has seen an especially high incidence of mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos during their military service. Asbestos was a popular material used in shipyards, engine and boiler rooms, sleeping quarters and galleys, and other areas aboard naval ships. Exposure was unavoidable for many service members, particularly between WWII and the Vietnam War. Approximately 4.3 million Americans may have been exposed to asbestos-containing materials during this time.

OSH will continue to inspect the VA facility to ensure that the known asbestos does not become a further threat until it is safely removed.
