Recently, a study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety proved hands-free technology found in vehicles can pose an extremely dangerous form of distracted driving. In fact, many drivers who are distracted by these systems that sync to smartphones can be distracted for as far as three football field lengths.

In 2013, roughly 3,100 people were killed in distracted driving accidents. An additional 424,000 persons suffered fatal injuries. Although these systems are hands-free, allowing drivers to control settings and options using voice commands, they pose serious risks due to cognitive distraction.

A professor from the University of Utah performed a test where he researched 250 adults in 10 different vehicles. The test showed that drivers using hands-free technologies must recover from a “technology hangover” interval before full alertness can be restored. Shockingly, this recovery period can take up to 27 seconds, creating dangerous situations for a long period of time. Of course, “technology hangover” recoveries depend on how complicated technology is for each driver.

Researchers from each study state that when a person is focused on talking to their car, they sacrifice attention that should be paid to road conditions, traffic conditions, and other drivers. They advise that just because many vehicles are equipped with such technologies does not mean that drivers should use them habitually. Instead, drivers should focus their attention on the road to ensure safety for themselves and other drivers.
