Kuraray America Inc. is a Houston-based chemical, fiber, and resin producer. The company announced plans to begin construction on a La Porte location in April 2013. The plant will manufacture polyvinyl alcohol or "PVA."

On May 27, a severe storm ripped through the construction site. Strong winds sent scaffolding, lumber, and other debris flying, hitting construction workers and causing serious injuries. Among the injured workers were employees of Grey Construction, Tellepsen, and Kuraray America.
