According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk driving has become a national epidemic; a problem in all states across the country. In Texas, though, that problem may just be a little more widespread than anywhere else. That's because Texas leads the nation in alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, according to statistics from the NHTSA. In 2012, 1,926 people died in Texas in alcohol-related traffic accidents.

The numbers are alarming – and they coincide with the more than 10,000 people that die in alcohol-impaired crashes each year, or one death every 51 minutes. Because drunk driving is so concerning – and because it's entirely preventable – Texas officials have increased their efforts to put a stop to the serious problem

Last week, on November 4th, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) held the Texas Impaired Driving Summit in San Antonio, bringing together law enforcement and other officials to find solutions to Texas' serious problem. With the holidays soon approaching – a time when alcohol-impaired accidents increase – officials decided to take swift action to hold the summit.
