Speeding causes approximately 33% of traffic-related death in the United States – nearly 10,000 lives every year. In a recent survey, one in five drivers said, "I get where I'm going as fast as I can." Additionally, half of drivers described speeding as a problem on U.S. Roadways.

According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, "We all have places we need to go, but it's never the right decision to put ourselves, our families and others in harm's way to get there faster."

While many drivers admit to speeding, Mr. Foxx warns motorists to exercise caution on the road during the winter. He said, "This is another reminder…to obey speed limits, reduce speed in inclement weather conditions and allow plenty of time to arrive safely."

In the National Survey of Speeding Attitudes and Behavior, the NHTSA discovered a wide gamut of attitudes toward speeding. Four out of five drivers believed that driving near the posted speed limit reduces the likelihood of an accident. In other words, most drivers believe that driving the speed limit is safer than speeding. About 91% of drivers believed that "everyone should obey the speed limits because it's the law." An additional 48% indicated that measures should be taken to a reduce speeding on U.S. roadways.

Even still, a startling number of drivers admitted that they ignore the posted speed limit. In fact, more than 25% of drivers said that they speed without giving it a second though. Others said that they actually liked to speed because driving fast is exhilarating. Sixteen percent of all individuals surveyed felt that speeding was only dangerous for unskilled drivers.

NHTSA authorities are concerned that this nonchalant attitude will cause more car accidents and cost lives. According to the NHTSA administrator, speeding is dangerous because it places the driver and other motorists / passengers at risk of injury and death.

To encourage safe driving, the NHTSA initiated the "Five to Drive" campaign. Five to Drive encourages parents to teach teens about speeding, cell phones, extra passengers, alcohol, and driving without a seat belt before young drivers hit the road.
