Preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a fact-finding agency for the U.S. Department of Labor, report alarming information for 2012 – work-related deaths reached the highest number in 10 years.

According to statistics from the BLS, there were a total of 531 worker fatalities in 2012, a more than 20 percent increase from statistics reported in 2011. 2012 marked the most work-related deaths in a decade and figures are especially alarming because they come after two years in which worker fatalities were decreasing.

Common Causes of Workplace Deaths in Texas

BLS data also revealed the occupations in which these worker fatalities occurred. According to data, some of the most deadly professions in the state included employment sectors that commonly rank high in workplace accidents and injuries, including the construction and maritime and offshore industry. In 2012, however, the number one occupation for worker fatalities was driving large commercial vehicles and tractor-trailer trucks. As far as worker fatalities are concerns, there was a 57 percent increase in fatal truck accidents in 2012. Employee deaths in the construction industry also increased.

In a statement from the BLS, traffic accidents continued to be the leading cause of fatal work injuries, accounting for a majority of the dramatic increase for 2012. In many of these traffic accidents, other motorists suffered harm as well.
