New statistics compiled and published by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) report alarming trends on Texas roads and highways – pedestrian and bicycle accidents throughout the state are on the rise. Data from TxDOT and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed the following:

• There were 5,000 pedestrian accidents in Texas in 2012.
• Of these pedestrian accidents, close to 3,000 resulted in serious injuries and 481 resulted in death.
• In 2012, there were roughly 2,000 bicycle accidents in Texas.
• Of these bicycle accidents, 1,450 bicyclists were seriously injured and 56 were killed.
• Throughout the nation in 2012, one pedestrian was injured every eight minutes and one was killed every 119 minutes.

Alarming as these statistics may be, they serve to highlight the well-known fact that pedestrians and bicycle riders face high rates of injuries and death during traffic accidents.
