According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' annual Occupational Injuries and Illnesses Report, an estimated three million workers suffered job-related injuries in 2012. For government regulators and officials, this number is simply too high. In an effort to make workplace environments safer and to reduce the numbers of preventable accidents and injuries, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is proposing a new rule for reporting workplace injuries.
The proposed rule is nothing extreme, and it does not require any additional reporting requirements or procedures than are already in place. Instead, the rule would make employers with more than 250 workers electronically submit work-related injury reports to OSHA on a quarterly basis.
OSHA plans to use this new electronic reporting system to better analyze causes of workplace accidents in a variety of industries. Analyzing data would further enable OSHA to take preventative steps toward minimizing risks and will help in the development of new procedures and programs. Data will also be made available to the public online.
