Car Accident Statistics During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Car Accident Statistics During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic affected everyone across the world in a multitude of ways. For a great portion of 2020, many people were quarantined to help prevent the spread of the virus. Due to this, many would assume that car accident cases decreased since people traveled less. However, you will be surprised to know that isn’t the case.

Car Accident Statistics During the Pandemic

Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Americans drove less in 2020. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a significant decrease in car accidents. NHTSA’s early estimates show that an estimated 38,680 people died in car accidents – this is the largest projected number of fatalities since 2007.

To put it in perspective, this is a seven percent increase in car accident deaths compared to 2019. These statistics are alarming considering that the number of miles driven in 2020 was 13 percent less than the previous year. The NHTSA found that the accident fatalities didn’t only increase for passenger vehicles, they also grow for:

  • Motorcyclists (up by 9%)

  • Pedestrians (remained the same as the previous year)

  • Pedalcyclists (up by 5%)

  • Passenger vehicles (5%)
