The Deer Park Fire has now joined the ranks of several infamous incidents occurring in Houston over the last 75 years. These often-deadly fires and explosions are notorious in the area due to the collective of chemical plants and refineries. Houston is wrought with petrochemical facilities and this is not the area’s first major fire, nor will it likely be the last.
The Deer Park Fire joins the ranks of some of the most devastating chemical fires in Texas history, starting with the Texas City fire of 1947. When a cargo ship carrying fuel oil, ammunition, and ammonium nitrate fertilizer caught on fire, it caused a nearby ship to explode. Nearly 600 people died in what is known as one of the largest non-nuclear explosions to ever strike the area. Texas City later saw another major explosion in 2005 when a distillation tower over-pressurized and created a “geyser.”
Pasadena has also suffered its fair share of tragic explosions, particularly when the Phillips chemical plant caught on fire and workers had less than 90 seconds to vacate the premises before an explosion took place--resulting in 23 deaths and over 100 injuries. Unfortunately, Pasadena was hit yet again last year with another fiery incident.
