A large explosion at the Valero Plant last Thursday evening – April 19, 2018 – was felt throughout Texas City and beyond, filling the air with thick smoke and putting local residents on edge. According to authorities, the explosion occurred shortly before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday and resulted in a large fire at the refinery, which produces over 200,000 barrels per day.
Officials from the City of Texas City Emergency Management reported that emergency crews quickly responded to the incident and contained the fire roughly and hour and a half after the blast. All employees and crew members were also accounted for, and no injuries have yet been reported.
Representatives from Valero have stated that they are cooperating with local, state, and federal officials to investigate what took place, as well as whether the blast could and should have been prevented. The unit where the blast occurred is an alkylation unit that converts by-products into high-octane components which are blended into gasoline.

Due to the nature of industrial facilities and the oil and gas industry, the potential for serious explosions, fires, catastrophic injuries, and death are tremendous. However, companies which operate these facilities have a duty of care to ensure regulations are followed and that steps are taken to protect workers and all those nearby. Investigations following explosions like the one at the Valero plant this past Thursday are critical to understanding how companies may fail to uphold their legal obligations, what can be done to prevent future incidents, and provide any victims harmed by those failures with the supporting evidence they need to seek a recovery of their damages.
