Can Sleeping Medications Contribute to a Higher Risk of Car Accidents?

Can Sleeping Medications Contribute to a Higher Risk of Car Accidents?

A new study has suggested there may be a connection between older persons taking sleeping pills, such as Ambien, and a higher risk of car accidents. Researchers uncovered these findings by evaluating data which examined the driving records of 2,000 people living in Alabama who were 70 years old or older. The study confirmed the following:

  • Women who consumed Ambien had a 61% higher probability of car accidents over the five-year timespan compared to women who did not consume Ambien.
  • The risk was two times higher for drivers over the age of 80.

These findings are not the first of their kind. In fact, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Alabama stated many researchers have already produced literature regarding prescription medicines and accidents. Another study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that the use of sleeping pills, regardless of drivers’ ages, doubled the risks for car accidents compared to people who did not consume such medications.

As a result, researchers believe doctors and patients need to pay more attention to when these medications are prescribed and consumed. Many sources state it is especially important to regulate such usage for elderly persons since these types of drugs “tend to be more variable” in older persons. However, because it is difficult to determine a standard safe window for after taking sleeping medications, these types of conversations need to be held between each individual patients and their prescribing doctors.
