NHTSA Bicycle Accident Facts & Safety Tips

Bicycle accidents are devastating and are responsible for between 600 and 800 deaths in the United States every year. More than 30,000 cyclists suffer injuries in auto accidents as well. Texas has one of the highest rates of bicyclist accident deaths in the country.

The NHTSA reminds bicyclists to always wear a helmet every time they ride. Helmets are a vital way to prevent serious head injuries in the event of an accident. It is also important to increase a cyclist’s visibility through the use of reflective clothing or equipment, and to always make sure to follow the same direction as traffic.

Drivers must remember to provide at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist – getting too close is not only dangerous, but it is also a violation of Texas’s safe passing laws and could result in a fine.

Bicyclists and drivers alike are considered vehicle operators and, as such, are reminded to share the road. Both must obey all posted signals, signs, and lane markings and yield when appropriate.
