The Daspit Law Firm would like to wish everyone throughout Houston and the state of Texas a happy Fourth of July! During this time of year, many of us celebrate the holiday with friends and family. As with many other holidays, risks of accidents and injuries can increase during the Fourth of July.
To help you keep yourself and your loved ones safe this weekend, The Daspit Law Firm has put together some helpful safety tips:
Drunk driving accidents, injuries, and deaths are consistently high during Fourth of July weekend. If you plan on celebrating the birth of our nation with a few drinks, make sure to drink responsibly or plan for a ride. Plan rides with friends or family, or call a cab or transportation service like Uber or Lyft. Remember, law enforcement officers will be on high alert for intoxicated motorists.
Although different cities have different laws when it comes to personal use of fireworks, many choose to celebrate the Fourth by lighting off a few fireworks of their own. If you plan to do the same, remember these important tips:
- Always follow instructions and supervise children using fireworks. Never provide fireworks to small children.
- Use fireworks in a safe area where they do not pose a risk of hurting others or damaging property. Never throw or point fireworks toward people, vehicles, structures, or flammable materials.
- Avoid lighting multiple fireworks at once and never attempt to relight a “dud” firework that doesn’t go off the first time.
Many Americans celebrate the Fourth at the beach, lake, or by enjoying the water at backyard pool parties. When having fun near or in the water, however, make sure that safety is a priority. Supervise children, use safety vests when enjoying water activities, drink responsibly, and know how to react in the event of an emergency.
Use caution when barbecuing - numerous people suffer injuries when barbecuing on charcoal and gas grills. Make sure to never grill indoors, surpervise the grill when it’s in use, never add lighter fluid when charcoal has already been ignited, and always follow instructions.
